everything you need to know about the
tax-free investment opportunity

1. How much can I invest?

The annual contribution limit for an investor in a tax-free product is currently R30 000 in a tax-year, or R500 000 over a lifetime. You do not have to invest the full amount per month or per year (although minimums do apply) but it makes sense to invest the maximum amount each year to make full use of the tax-saving benefits.

2. Is my money locked or can I access it?

Apart from the tax-savings, which can be significant over the long-term, tax-free investments are also flexible. Your money is not locked in and while it is absolutely best to leave your investment for the long-term to get the full tax benefits, if you do require your money, it is easy to access it.

3. Do I have to put the whole R30 000 in at once?

No. You can contribute a lump sum investment or you can choose to contribute smaller monthly amounts. However, it is important to keep track of your annual investment amount so that you do not contribute more than the contribution limit of R30 000 per year or R500 000 over a life time as there will be penalties for this.

4. Can I contribute on behalf of my child or any other family member?

Yes absolutely. You can contribute to a tax-free investment on behalf of your child or a family member, just remember that your annual donations tax allowance will apply if you exceed the annual contribution limit.

5. Is my money definitely tax-free?

Yes absolutely 0% tax. Tax-free investments allow investors to invest a relatively small amount of money and take advantage of the benefits of compounding, especially over the longer term, without paying any tax on interest, dividends or capital gains. And, if you open an investment on behalf of a family member, you will not pay donations tax provided you are within the annual allowance.

6. What funds can I invest in?

Nedgroup Investments offers a wide range of funds that you can choose form for tax-free investments. This means that you can choose a fund that suits your individual needs and take full advantage of the tax savings opportunities available.

7. Is there a specific fund Nedgroup Investments recommends?

We offer a wide range of funds catering to a full spectrum of risk and investment profiles so that investors can choose a fund that is best for their unique needs. To find out more about each of our funds, you can visit the Funds page of our website. We also recommend that you speak to an experienced financial planner to help you choose the best fund for you.

8. If I am already saving in another vehicle, should I consider changing that to include the tax-free savings?

Tax-free investments are a government supported initiative that really do offer an opportunity to make smart use of tax savings. Your money can also grow faster in a tax-free savings account compared to a regular savings account because you don't pay tax on the investment return. Therefore, it is an investment you should consider – but speak to your financial advisor to make sure that your savings plan is working optimally for your needs.

9. Why invest with Nedgroup Investments?
